As promised, here is the first of the videos I took with the Kodak Playsport camera while I was in Maui.  This is a short clip of me riding a wave into shore with the camera.  It was taken at the beach at the Fairmont Kea Lani resort in Maui, Hawaii.

I recently got married and we went to Hawaii on our honeymoon.

I know what you are thinking.. perfect place to bring the Kodak Playsport.  You are right.

We just got back a week ago and I finally downloaded all the videos and pictures from the camera onto my computer.  I’ve commented before about how good the quality is for the price and size, but I want to reiterate it, because we are just blown away.  Now, it’s not as amazing looking as our Canon Vixia SF-200, but it is much more portable and great for use in situations where I don’t want to carry the Canon, or when I’m afraid I might damage it.

In Maui we used the Playsport in both the ocean and the pool and on other places around the island.  We took it snorkeling, we took it down the waterslide in the pool, and we took it up Mount Haleakala.  On the Big Island, we took it in the pool, we took it snorkeling and we took it ziplining.  In all situations, the camera worked flawlessly.

We are in the process of converting the videos to web format and we’ll upload them shortly.

The other day I broke my Kodak Playsport! :(

I was trying to take out the battery, but it was stuck, so I used a pair of pliers to pull it out (bad idea).  Anyway, now the slot that holds the battery and the memory card are broken and neither fits into the unit anymore.

Needless to say, I called up Kodak and received excellent support.  I’m going to send in my unit and they’ll fix it for free!  Great customer support.

Hopefully it’s back quickly as I’m going to Hawaii in a month and I’ll be doing a bunch of snorkeling.

The Kodak Playsport camera continues to impress the Amazon reviewers. After being on the market for almost a year, this camera continues to get excellent reviews from customers. With over 500 reviews, the camera still averages 4 stars, with the picture quality score sitting at 4.5 stars! This goes to show how a simple, low cost camera that shoots great video will be loved by customer after customer.

As customers continue to post rave reviews, we’ll continue to post them here as we think the Playsport is probably one of the better pocket video cameras you can buy.  We love ours, and we know if you buy one, you’ll love yours too.

i have owned this little camera for about 5 months-i like the videos it shoots (i’ve attached one here shot at 720@60-the only setting i use). it has it’s ups and downs for sure, but where else can you buy a HD/waterproof camera for this price?? yes, i’m sure not all have been perfect. maybe i’m lucky to have gotten a good one. yes it has some quirky issues-and the display is hard to see in the sun etc…but i like the fact that it’s easy to carry and can be used when raining etc. the optional remote is not great but useable. i wish i could pause it during recording, but i can’t seem to do this. extra batteries and a charger are a good thing to buy (can be found cheap on amazon or ebay). i rated it 4 stars because of the little things that could be better. but too, i have recommended it to many people i know. keep in mind that you are not spending $500-$1000 for a camcorder. for the price it’s well worth it. i am enjoying mine, hope you’ll enjoy yours!!!!

Check out this video of someone skydiving with the Kodak Playsport.  He also wrote an excellent review:

“I mount this little camera on the bow of my scull when I’m on the lake. Usually, it’s early in the morning. Ducks are swimming, fish are jumping while I’m there. And guess what, this camera makes it all there for me when I get back.
When I go skydiving, I put the camera on my parachute chest strap. The only way I’ve found to do that is through a transparent camera case that is fashioned in such a way that the camera is upside-down. So it records the pictures upside-down. When I get home, I use Windows Live Movie Maker to turn the pictures right-side-up, piece the movie segments together, and complete the movie for me.
What a treat this little camera has been. I bought a 32GB card for it, so it WAY outlasts the battery. But recently, I bought an “extended life battery” for the camera and hopefully that will help out. The extended life battery came with a one-hour charger that you can use at home or in the car. Great buy for about $20, total.
Buy this camera. You won’t regret it!”

Amazing – Another 5 star review for the Kodak Playsport HD – “It’s amazing camera: We’re at Kumba in Busch Gardens Tampa”.

Check out the video someone took of the Kumba roller coaster in Busch Gardens with the Playsport HD.

Check out this video to see how much the image stabilization on the Playsport HD actually helps.

If you aren’t a fan of the software included with the Playsport or Quicktime, check out VLC.  It’s a very small application that works on Windows, Mac, and Linux and should be able to play all your Playsport recordings.   Check out their site at http://www.videolan.org/vlc/.

I was just searching around on Amazon, and it seems like Kodak is coming out with a new video camera – the Kodak PlayTouch.  This camera seem very similar to both the PlaySport and the Zi8, but with a touchscreen.  It looks like it has the same recording modes and same photo shooting mode, but with a much bigger screen.  I’ll post more details as they come in.
